Bullfighters History
Bullfighting has a long history steeped in tradition and culture. While bullfighting appears in numerous mythological stories from Greece and Mesopotamia, the origins of man versus beast in a contest are often linked with Rome when gladiators would face animals in a contest. These original bullfighters would be revered as heroes should they tame whatever beast they took on in the colosseums and that tradition continues today with modern bullfighters enjoying celebrity status in their hometowns. Fighting animals is present throughout history, with bullfighting on horseback practiced in Medieval Spain and fighting bulls on foot introduced around 1726.
Modern bullfighting is credited to Juan Belmonte, who introduced a more daring and revolutionary way of fighting the bulls. Belmonte never strayed more than a few centimeters from the bull throughout the entire fight, adding a huge element of risk and excitement to the spectacle. Considered the greatest matador of all time, Belmonte's style is still emulated today with many bullfighters considering this fighting style the ultimate way of bullfighting. As bullfighting developed, many different styles popped up around the world including several variations of the Spanish style, a distinct Portuguese style in two stages, and a French style which is steeped in tradition dating back to the days of Rome and their gladiator fights.
